Wonderful Willow and Perfect Poplar

At The Sign Maker, we’re proud of our efforts to care for the countryside. As highlighted on our Caring for the Countryside page, we’ve planted over 1,500 willow and poplar trees across the farm. This initiative serves several purposes. Firstly, it creates valuable habitats for local wildlife while also providing a sustainable source of logs for our biomass boiler, making our energy use even more eco-friendly. Additionally, the trees act as natural windbreaks, which are especially useful on our breezy site. These sheltered areas offer a welcome respite, allowing you to fully enjoy the sun’s warmth.

Helping Wildlife Through Autumn and Into Winter

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, autumn is a busy time for wildlife. Birds, insects, and mammals are all preparing for the colder months ahead — building up food stores, finding shelter, and conserving energy. Here in North Devon, we’re lucky to be surrounded by nature, and we’ve made it a priority to support it wherever we can. From our wildlife ponds to our bird feeding stations and habitat areas, we see first-hand how small actions can make a big difference.

If you’d like to give local wildlife a helping hand this season, here are some simple and effective ways to do it.

Corian Memorial Plaques: A Modern, Durable Tribute

What is Corian — and why it works so well for memorials

Corian is a “solid surface” material originally developed by DuPont. It’s made from a blend of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate (a mineral derived from bauxite ore), giving it a unique combination of properties. The result? A material that looks and feels like natural stone — cool to the touch, with a matte finish and considerable weight — yet has none of the flaws (cracks, fault-lines, unpredictable patterning) often found in real stone. The uniform structure makes it especially suited for engraved memorial plaques and is often a substitute for real stone as fine detail can be included.

The Power of Professional Signage for Tourism and Trade

In a competitive tourism and business landscape, visibility matters. The right signage doesn’t just tell people where you are — it shapes first impressions, builds trust and enhances the overall visitor experience.

Living and working in Devon, we see first-hand how effective signage can transform a business. From rural attractions and holiday parks to independent shops and professional premises, a well-designed, well-positioned sign helps customers find you — and remember you.

Whether your goal is to direct visitors straight to your door or to create signage that captures the essence of your brand, bespoke, high-quality signage makes a lasting difference.

How to Choose the Perfect Signs for Your Business

First impressions matter. The signage outside your business is often the very first interaction a customer has with your brand. Well-designed business signage not only helps people find you, but it also communicates professionalism, builds trust and encourages customers to step inside.

Whether you run a shop on the high street, a rural farm shop, a café, or a professional office, choosing the right sign can make a huge difference. In this guide we explore some of the best types of signs for businesses and how to choose the perfect one for your premises.
