Oak is a strong, durable hardwood with a naturally attractive grain. Even when painted, the unique grain of the oak remains subtly visible, adding depth and character to your sign.

If you would prefer a smoother finish with less visible grain, we can use the hardwood Sapele - a sustainable, fast-growing hardwood with excellent environmental credentials. For a more cost-effective option, our Tricoya wood-based board offers superb durability and weather resistance while maintaining a smart painted finish.

Black and white painted oak signs have a timeless, traditional appeal. When paired with a modern font, however, their clean, crisp style also suits contemporary settings perfectly.

These signs can be crafted as single-sided house signs or as double-sided hanging signs. Our standard colour options include:

• Black letters on a white background

• White letters on a black background

• Gold letters on a black background

For a finish that lasts, we use a two-component polyurethane paint. This specialist paint is far more durable than standard brush-on options - not only tougher and longer lasting, but also highly resistant to chemicals and everyday wear.

White lettering on a black background is widely recognised as the easiest combination to read from a distance, thanks to its strong contrast and clarity in all lighting conditions. Black lettering on a white background follows closely behind, offering similarly high visibility and a clean, classic look. Both options are excellent choices when clear, easy-to-read signage is a priority.

NB We do apply several coats of our tough commercial paint so the letters will feel very slightly raised to the touch.
