All builders, good or bad will have a preconceived idea of how far underground a post should go. Indeed as there are so many variables, there is no substitute for experience.

However the chart opposite is a good starting point. We would suggest with heavy oak posts with arms to go a little deeper.

It does also depend on soil type.
