Fire Exit Signs - BS5499

The format for these fire exit signs is specified in BS5499 Part 4: Code of practice for escape route signing - and the meanings are described below. Any existing, text only fire exit signs, do not comply with BS5499 and must be replaced or have a running man pictogram positioned alongside them.

Definitions for Fire Exit Signs Primary evacuation route; often the normally used access and the most direct route to a place of safety. Secondary evacuation route; often not the normally used access route, but an alternative route to a place of safety which can be used in the event of an emergency situation.
