The format for fire exit signs and signage is specified in BS5499 Part 4: Code of practice for escape route signing - and the meanings are described below. Text only fire exit signs, do not comply with BS5499 and must be replaced or have a running man sign positioned with them.

Definitions for Fire Exit Signs	Primary evacuation route; often the normally used access and the most direct route to a place of safety.	Secondary evacuation route; often not the normally used access route, but an alternative route to a place of safety which can be used in the event of an emergency situation.	Use for upgrading existing text only fire ext signs	Designed for use in Hospitals and healthcare buildings and conforms to the Hospitals Technical Memorandum (HTM65)
