Sweet chestnut is traditionally known as poor mans oak! It does look similar. It also has a high tannin content that makes it very durable.
Instead of engraving lettering, the background is sandblasted away leaving the letters slightly raised over a driftwood style finish.

Balau is an extremely heavy timber and long lasting, full of its own oil. It can withstand wet conditions better than most other timber.
